Everything that happens to you from Satan is screened by God first. This dialogue between Satan and God assures us that God is in control. When you are threshed like wheat (tested), it is only by God’s permission. Look at this passage from Job 1:7-12.The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.”Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”"Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.At the end of this testing, Job learned that the all-powerful God of the Universe holds the answer to suffering. Job argued to God that he was sinless and not deserving of suffering. God finally spoke and put Job in his place by asking him a few questions that he could not answer, such as “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?” (Job 38:4). Job understood then that we may not have all the answers to why we suffer. “Surely spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know” (Job 42:3).	There is one major lesson to know or will not be able to face the death to self: it is the necessity of experiencing God’s cooking pot. If you are cooking out in this desert, it is under the auspices of the Heavenly Father. He knows how to get each pot to the correct temperature so as to melt off impurities from our hearts. If you believe you are a victim, that God is picking on you, or that you should not suffer because it is time for someone else to suffer, then you might jump out of the cooking pot, out of the hot desert, or off the altar. Ezekiel 24:3b-5 says:” ‘Put on the cooking pot; put it on and pour water into it. Put into it the pieces of meat, all the choice pieces —the leg and the shoulder. Fill it with the best of these bones; take the pick of the flock. Pile wood beneath it for the bones; bring it to a boil and cook the bones in it.’ “ The only way I have ever been able to tough it out is to know that this pressure to submit my will is from the Father. James 1:2-4 points out, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Most of us have been through some significant suffering. Some have suffered child abuse, sexual abuse, or molestation. Others have experienced verbal abuse, injustice, and financial devastation. We have all endured many things, no matter what it looks like on the outside. It sounds all well and good that we will gain so much patience and character, but when I am in the middle of having to give up my food or my way, gaining more character is no motivation for me. As I said before, the only thing that can possibly make me stay in this heat is to know that it is God’s oven. Because He coordinated, so worthy of reverse, I would not consider running from the desert if that is where He wants me. I would consider changing only my will and desires. For example, even if a marriage is tough—God hates for you to jump out of the cooking pot before the cooking is done. God and Jesus always encouraged us first to stay in the oven!Change yourself before you change the surroundings. Make sure God is leading you to change jobs, or God just might re-create the same situation in the next job. Do not even think about getting even with someone who has wronged you—in fact, turn the other cheek. How do I know if I am right about this? Just try it for yourself. Try to get out of any suffering, including the painful suffering of dying to yourself with food. You will find that you remain miserable. And if you jump out of one cooking pot or off the altar, you will find that God will put you in another. You seemingly will put on five pounds overnight, and you will feel downcast again. Now reverse that choice of behavior and just bear through the wait for hunger. You will come through the pain and feel fantastic on the other side. You will get on the scales and reap reward! It boils down to the illustration above.*62\237\2*

Although most of us continually try to reduce our body fat, there are levels below which we dare not go. A minimal amount of body fat is necessary for insulation of the body, for cushioning between parts of the body and vital organs, and for maintaining body functions. In men, this lower limit is approximately 3 to 4 percent. Women should generally not go below 8 percent. Excessively low body fat in females may lead to amenorrhea, a disruption of the normal menstrual cycle. The critical level of body fat necessary to maintain normal menstrual flow is believed to be between 8 and 13 percent, but there are numerous exceptions to this rule and many additional factors that affect the menstrual cycle. Under extreme circumstances, such as starvation diets and certain diseases, the body often utilizes all available fat reserves and begins to break down muscle tissue as a last-ditch effort to obtain nourishment.
While some of us like to say that we are storing up fat to protect ourselves from the great food shortages of the future, there are limits to the plausibility of this argument! The fact is that too much fat and too little fat are both potentially harmful. The key is to find a level at which you are not at high risk for health problems and at which you are comfortable with your appearance.

All of the major nutrients—carbohydrate, fat, protein and alcohol— can ultimately regenerate ATP as needed to fuel the body. However, this occurs through different metabolic pathways. Basically, when immediate energy is called for to create movement, especially sudden movement, stored ATP and creatine phosphate (CP) in the muscle are used. Using the money analogy, this could be equated to cash. There’s no conversion needed here, and the transaction is quick. Energy is supplied for up to 10 seconds and a period of 1-2 minutes is all that is needed to replenish supplies. The whole process is carried out without oxygen (an aerobically). The type of activity which uses this form of energy is short, sharp bursts of ‘power’ type activity such as short sprints or weight lifting. Because fat is not immediately implicated in the system, there is little role for this type of exercise in fat burning, at least in the short term.
Sit-ups can tone muscle but will have little effect on the subcutaneous fat overlaying this muscle.

In a sense, automatic thoughts are just the tip of the iceberg. Lurking beneath the surface are some implicit rules by which the patient operates. These rules spring from deeply held assumptions, beliefs, and values.

Dr. Christopher Fairburn has come up with a list of the most common of these attitudes:

-”I must be thin, because to be thin is to be successful, attractive, and happy.”

-”I must avoid being fat because to be fat is to be a failure, unattractive, and unhappy.”

-”Self-indulgence is bad because it is a sign of weakness.”

-”Self-control is good because it is a sign of strength and discipline.”

-”Anything less than total success is utter failure.”

In therapy we bring these attitudes to the surface, analyze them, and challenge them. We try to discover both the advantages and the disadvantages of holding on to such beliefs. For example, there are reasons why people may base their feelings of self-esteem on their weight. After all, measuring weight and judging oneself accordingly, is a simple task. Weight is one thing about themselves that people can have some control over. Besides, gaining weight gives a good excuse for failure in other areas of life: “Of course no one asks me out; I’m a fat pig aren’t I?”

The downside of this attitude is that the patient will never be satisfied with her weight-and thus herself-for long. Focusing on weight distracts one from working on real problems in forming and keeping relationships. By concentrating on dieting, a person can avoid having to deal with issues of low self-esteem or other bad feelings.

In therapy we look for insight into how these attitudes arose. What influence did the patient’s family, friends, and social forces have on her thinking? When did these beliefs begin? How did they take root and grow? What else was going on in her life at the time the attitude started? One way to shed light on such questions is for the patient to talk to friends of long standing, or look at old family photos or diaries.

The desire to be in control often overwhelms the patient’s ability to think clearly. She believes that if she can’t control her body functions, such as hunger, menstruation, or sexual drive, then catastrophe will result. Such an attitude is one of the hardest to shake.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. For Julia Ferraro and her mother, Adelaide, a photo is worth 90 pounds.

This particular photo, taken in June 1997, shows a father, mother, son, and daughter, all smiling at their annual family picnic.

It s a moment frozen in time, a vivid reminder of when Julia and Adelaide each weighed 205 pounds. Both women are 5-feet, 2- ST inches tall.

“Each of us got a copy of the picture for Christmas that year. My mom and I cried when we saw it. That was the fattest we had ever been,” says Julia, 37, of Brooklyn, New York. “You know you’re getting bigger, but it doesn’t really hit you until you look at a picture of yourself.”

Instead of stashing the photo out of sight, Julia and Adelaide agreed to display it prominently in the front row of a table full of family photos. It gave them incentive to get serious about losing weight. Their first step was to join Weight Watchers the following February. Now, they attend classes every week.

Every day, Julia and Adelaide take a long look at that picnic photo. Since it was taken, the two women have lost a combined 90 pounds and five dress sizes. Julia, who’s 50 pounds lighter, went from a size 18 to a 12. Her mother dropped 40 pounds, shrinking from a size 18 to a 14.

Both women want to lose more weight, and they’re pleased to report that they’re well on their way. They’ve added a new photo to their tabletop gallery. This one shows a mother and daughter— slimmer and smiling.

WINNING ACTION

Showcase your “before” photo. Find a photo of yourself and keep it where you can see it every day—on your nightstand or refrigerator, for example. As you lose weight, take new photos and display them with your old photo. They’ll serve as visual reminders of where you started and where you’re headed in terms of your weight-loss goals.
