THREE-DIMENSIONAL CONFORMAL THERAPY FOR PROSTATE CANCER: THE DOSE OF RADIATION RECEIVED

In some research studies, something else was becoming clear: The dose of radiation received has a lot to do with who gets cured and who doesn’t. In other words, men who receive higher doses of radiation have lower relapse rates than men who receive lower radiation doses. However, in traditional radiation treatment, higher dosage almost always means more, and worse, side effects (the nearby bladder and rectum are particularly susceptible to injury).

Enter the high-tech advances: Intricate software and imaging systems that allow 3-D treatment planning and computer-controlled radiation delivery systems; elaborate computer programs that can zip through sophisticated mathematical calculations of prostate volume and radiation dose per millimeter (or even smaller) of tissue; amazing technological advances that make it possible for doctors to custom-design a 3-D model and treatment plan, so each patient’s prostate tumor can get the most precise and thorough radiation coverage possible.
