These offenders became criminals rather slowly, but from age thirty on the proportion of men convicted for some offense is high and parallels that of the prison group. However, the offenses were for the most part minor, as reflected in the lesser sentences. For example, by age thirty some 56 per cent of the prison group had received a sentence of one or more years while the same was true of only 32 per cent of the offenders vs. adults.
The only other outstanding point is the fact that the proportions of nonsex offenses and sex offenses are equal (51 and 49 per cent). These offenders are as much general offenders as they are sex offenders. They display a rather varied and nonprofessional criminality centering mainly on crimes against property (theft) but with much vagrancy, disorderly conduct, and similar troublemaking. While other groups consist predominantly of sex offenders, most of whom have statistically atypical sexual behavior, the offenders vs. adults appear to be a fairly delinquent but not seriously criminal group whose sex offenses do not depart much from the statistical norm.
